How to Measure Curtains and Rods

How to measure curtain rods and tracks

  1. Curtain rods or tracks are suggested to be around 8" more than your window at each side.
  2. For curtain rods, please enter the rod (pole) length only. We will provide the finials free of extra charge.
  3. Please note that your room need to have enough space to install the finials, which are usually about 4" in length. Otherwise, you need to choose end caps instead of finials for your curtain rods.

How to measure curtains

It's better for you to measure curtains after you have measured and installed curtain rods or tracks. Generally, Curtain rods or tracks are installed about 6" above the upper window frame.

Measure curtain width:

  • For ready made curtains, please refer to Size Guide on the product page.
  • For custom made curtains, the width you need to enter would be the length of curtain rod or track. Then select curtain fullness you prefer.

Fullness is the word to describe the density of folds (pleats or gathering) of curtains when hung up. It is the total width of flat curtain panels divided by the width you'd like to cover. The more fullness, the more folds. For more information, please refer to Order Custom Curtains.

Measure curtain length:

  • Rod pocket, tab top and back tabs curtains: measure from the top of curtain rod to where you want the curtains to fall.
  • Grommet curtains: measure from the top of curtain rod to where you want the curtains to fall,  and plus 1-1/2" (because grommets are placed 1-1/2" below the top of curtain panel.)
  • All other heading style curtains: measure from the bottom of curtain rod rings or track rollers to where you want the curtains to fall.

Generally, curtains are suggested to fall along the bottom edge of the window frame or 10" below. For sliding doors, curtains are suggested to fall 1" above the floor if you do not like the huddles.

Anyway, the exact curtain length is a personal preference, so please order the length you feel most comfortable with.

Rod pocket, tab top, back tab, and grommet curtains are only suitable to hang to curtain rods and all other heading style curtains are suitable for both curtain rods and curtain tracks.
